Obituary

Alice Anne (nee O'Brien) Hughes, 93, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2024, at the home of her daughter, Mary, and son-in-law, George O'Brien. She was a devoted wife to her husband for 63 years, a fantastic mother of two, an incredible grandmother of 7, a passionate great grandmother of 8, and a loving daughter to her mother. She rooted fiercely for Notre Dame teams, loved watching Lawrence Welk, was an avid fan of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, and thoroughly enjoyed talking… to anyone about anything!

She was born in Philadelphia in 1930 and moved at the age of 6 to her home on Ardmore Terrace, Collingswood, NJ, where she would become a beloved fixture of the neighborhood for over 75 years before moving to Cherry Hill, NJ. She went to St John's Catholic School in Collingswood and then Camden Catholic High School, where she graduated in 1948. She was President of her class in 1945,1946, and 1947.

After graduating from Camden Catholic, she received additional instruction at Mrs. O'Neil's Secretarial School and worked for the law offices of  Wallace, Douglass, and Gerry, in Camden, NJ. She supported State Senator Bruce A. Wallace during his terms in office from 1948 through 1955.

On December 26, 1953, Alice Ann married her soulmate and lifelong best friend, Eddie Hughes. They had become sweethearts while Sophomores at Camden Catholic. She left the business world in 1954 when the first of her two children were born. She dedicated the next 36 years to supporting her husband, raising her children, caring for her aging mother, and nurturing her seven grandchildren.

She was very active in her parish, Transfiguration Catholic Church in West Collingswood, where she attended daily mass and was a long-time member of the Altar & Rosary Society. She became a close and dear friend to many of her "church buddies" at Transfiguration. In addition, Alice actively supported the parent teacher associations at her children's schools.

At the ripe age of 60, she re-entered the workforce, accepting a part-time position as an intake clerk for the Federal Bankruptcy Court in Camden, NJ. She was a fearless dynamo and a friendly face to all. As a testimony to the impact that she had, over 500 people attended her retirement party five years after she started.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Warren John O'Brien and Alice Gertrude (Toner) O'Brien and her husband, Edward William Hughes. She is survived by her devoted daughter Mary Alice (Hughes) O'Brien, a wonderful son-in-law, George G. O'Brien, Sr. of Cherry Hill, NJ and her loving son, Warren Edward Hughes of Reston, VA. She was an attentive and enthusiastic grandmother to George G. O'Brien, Jr, Alice (O'Brien) Spinelli, Brien Edward Hughes, Stephen Arthur Hughes, Edward O'Brien, Maura (Hughes) MacMahon, and Phillip Warren Hughes. She was blessed with a long life to see her children's children's children, and she thoroughly enjoyed her 8 beautiful great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her viewing on Friday, March 8th, 10 to 11 AM at Most Precious Blood Parish, Transfiguration Church, 445 White Horse Pike, W. Collingswood, NJ.  Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 AM.  Entombment Calvary Cemetery, Cherry Hill, NJ.
