(Nee-Pike) On April 30, 2010, of Collingswood, NJ. Age 92 years.
Beloved wife of the late Lawrence H. Hand. Dear mother of Edmund L. (Lee) Hand and Joan (Fred) Newton. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 4 great, great grandchildren.
Mrs. Hand was a lifelong resident of Collingswood and a 1935 graduate of Collingswood High School. She was also a member of Tatem-Shields American Legion Auxiliary Post #17 since 1945. Over the years she held many offices, including president, vice president and secretary-treasurer. She chaired the unit's Girls' State program for many years and also served as counselor when the summer sessions were held at Douglas College. She was also past-president of the Camden County American Legion Auxiliary.
She served as den mother for the First United Methodist Church Cub Scout Pack and was very active as a Boy Scout parent. She was also a member of the Camden County Council of Girl Scouts and a leader of a Camp Fire Girls troop.
Mrs. Hand was employed by the Camden Fire Insurance Company during World War II and was secretary to the Camden County Republican Party during the 1960s. For nearly 30 years, she was employed at the Free Public Library of Collingswood, where she served as assistant to the director and held preschool story hours for two generations of children.
Civic responsibilities included, Treasurer for the Friends of the Collings-Knight House; she was also involved in many teaching programs conducted by the organization. Mrs. Hand also served as historian for the Borough of Collingswood.
As a result of her membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, she became interested in and taught classes instructing others in geneology.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her viewing Tuesday Evening 7 to 9 PM and Wednesday 9 to 10 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 260 Evesham Ave., Cherry Hill, NJ 08003. Funeral service will follow Tuesday 10 AM. Interment Locustwood Memorial Park, Cherry Hill, NJ.
The family suggests contributions be made to the Mission Fund of the church.
