Dorothy, Dottie or Dot, as she was called, was born in Philadelphia and raised in Collingswood where she lived and raised her family for over 50 years. She graduated from St. John's Elementary School in 1936 and Camden Catholic High School class of 1940. She was in the first graduating class of Temple University's Dental Hygiene School in 1942 and worked in that field for five years until marrying her lifelong friend Frank "Bud" Hill as World War II ended.
Dorothy dedicated herself to raising her children (Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader, PTA room mother). She took great pride in the scholastic, athletic and artistic accomplishments of her children.
After raising and nurturing her family, Dorothy continued giving by embarking on what would be a lifelong passion for volunteering. She was a longtime member of the St. Mary's Catholic Nursing Home Auxiliary, where for many years she assisted the seniors with their weekly bingo games right up until May 25, 2010. She was recently honored by the auxiliary as the oldest active member. She was also a longtime member of Our Lady of Lourdes Auxiliary, working in the Lourdes Thrift Store for many years, and giving her talents in many of the group's fundraising efforts.
She had a lifelong love affair with the Jersey Shore, particularly Ocean City, NJ. Many will remember her along with her Aunt Marge as the "Penny Candy Ladies" who spent many summers behind the candy counter at Larzelere's General Store on the boardwalk. Many customers returned as adults with their own children to carry on a beloved tradition of counting out their favorite sweet treats to carry them through their week's vacation. The family will remember her sitting in her chair by the ocean wearing a big straw hat, slathered with NO-AD suntan lotion and enjoying a good summer read.
Dorothy was a woman of deep faith and attended daily mass for much of her adult life. She enjoyed traveling, music, reading, crafts and spending time with friends, including her Bridge Club, which has been meeting at least monthly for over 70 years. Her greatest joy was found in sharing her life with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was a great lady, the heart and soul of our family, always kind and loving. There was no better role model. The world was certainly a lovelier place while she was here. We are greatful that her life was full and active until the very end. She will be sadly missed by all who loved her. Special thanks to the entire staff at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, particularly the angels in the ICU.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her viewing Monday Evening 6 to 8 PM and Tuesday 9:30 to 10:30 AM at the FOSTER-WARNE FUNERAL HOME, 820 Haddon Ave., Collingswood, NJ. Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday 11 AM at the Church of St. John, Park & Lees Aves., Collingswood, NJ. Interment New St. Mary's Cemetery, Bellmawr, NJ.
The family suggests contributions be made in her name to St. Mary's Auxiliary, Inc., 210 St. Mary's Dr., Cherry Hill, NJ 08003 and/or Our Lady of Lourdes Auxiliary, 1004 Park Ave., Collingswood, NJ 08108.
