Eileen "Betty" Meier died on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the age of 90, surrounded by her children and grandchildren at her longtime home in Collingswood, NJ. Beloved wife of the late Josef Meier. Her spirit lives on in her children: Joseph (Barbara), Eileen Meier, Jim (Mary Anne), John (Amy) and Tom (Kelley); her grandchildren: Joe (Sara), Lauren (Danny), Adam, Melissa, John Thomas (Daniel), John, Alysha, Alexandra and Ian; her great grandchildren: Joey, Charlotte and Olivia; her sister, Ruthann Cunningham and her brother, Stanley Allen.
Betty grew up as the ninth of eleven children on a humble farm in Caledonia, WI. At the start of World War II, her patriotism and sense of adventure drove the young country girl to enlist in the Navy's WAVES. She was stationed at Mare Island Naval Hospital in California to work as a nurse to treat burn victims. Betty served with honor and dedication until the war's end, then channeled this spirit to pursue a career in acting. She traveled eastward to enroll in the Bessie V. Hicks School of Drama in Philadelphia, where she performed alongside Charles Bronson and Val Avery. There, she also met her husband, Joe; the two married and moved to Collingswood, NJ where they raised their five children. Aside from chasing around her trouble making boys, Betty worked 10 years at Camden County's Board of Elections. Eventually, she became a grandmother, and early on, the grandchildren grew familiar with her dedication to playtime, top-quality homemade meals and beachside reading. Over time, they learned about her love for cherry slot machines and horse racing, passion for politics and tolerance for people from all walks of life.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Betty's family on Friday, December 27th, 9:30 to 11:30 AM at the FOSTER-WARNE FUNERAL HOME, 820 Haddon Ave., Collingswood, NJ. Her Memorial Service will follow at 11:30 AM. Interment private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Samaritan Hospice, 5 Eves Dr., Suite 300, Marlton, NJ 08053.
