IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Evelyn A.
Jones
August 11, 1926 – July 6, 2023
(nee Anthony) Evelyn grew up in Philadelphia. Her English mother Eva died when she was just 4. Evelyn, her dad Wayne, and her siblings maintained
an ongoing correspondence with their English relatives for the rest of their lives. It may be, that those relationships were an important lifeline, to the memory of their dear mother Eva.
Evelyn also maintained a keen interest in the British royal family, and especially the queen. Her interest was different than most people's. It no doubt stemmed from
the loss of her mother and a need to feel close to her English heritage. Evelyn even bore a strong resemblance to the queen in her younger years. That she was born the same year as the queen, and like her, died at age 96, seems almost poetic.
Evelyn was a lifetime Philadelphia baseball fan, starting with the Athletics, and then the Phillies. As a young girl, she had an autograph book, that she would lower on a string into the A's dugout from the upper deck,
at Shibe Park.
Evelyn's family moved to New Jersey ( when she lost that precious autograph book!) after she graduated early from West Philadelphia High School. (She skipped 6th grade due to academic excellence) She lived 60 years in Collingswood, and 51 of those years
with her late husband Ted. Their 3 children were with them in Collingswood from the 50s through the 70s. Evelyn spent the last 3 years at Cherry Hill -, then Washington Township Senior Living. Evelyn loved her assisted living family and they loved her back. Neighbors, aides, nurses and other employees expressed their sadness at her passing. Their stories of how she entertained them came pouring out to her children. Evelyn prided herself in remembering all staff members' names, and saying their names often.
Her Collingswood neighbor and friend for nearly 70 years Edythe Abel, will miss her dearly. They spoke on the phone every evening until the very last day.
Evelyn was an avid student of history,
particularly World War II, perhaps inspired by her great great grandfather. John Anthony was a Revolutionary War
soldier, who was present at Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown.
An "amateur historian and tour guide," she often gave walking tours in Philadelphia to her husband Ted, sister Marian, and brother-in-law Al.
Evelyn was a voracious reader to the end. Her influence on her children is clear. They are all avid, inquisitive readers, who maintain a lifelong passion for learning.
"Ev" and "Ted" also instilled in their children a strong sense of thrift and frugality, a quality that they treasure, and practice to this day.
Evelyn's other interests included: lifelong First Methodist Church of Collingswood member; Elvis; line dancing; baking superb blueberry pies; Collingswood Library.
Evelyn was the beloved wife of the late Theodore E. Jones. Loving mother of Glenn (Christa) Jones, Ellen (James) Dudek and Carol Jones, all of Sarasota, FL. Devoted grandmother of Nicole Magee, Tracy (Axel) de Chevron Villette, Russell Magee, Denise Magee, Laurie Jones, Timothy (Jessica) Dudek, Emily (Minyong) Yu, Sarah (Alan) Kohl and Kevin Jones; and great grandmother to: Sabrina, Ethan, Jordan, Adrian, Julia, Laurel, Lee, May, William and Caroline.
Funeral service and interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
Evelyn's family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to her favorite charity, St. John of God Community Services at www.sjogcs.org/
