Obituary

On March 2, 2011, of Collingswood, NJ. Age 88 years.

Beloved husband of 64 years to the late Mary Elizabeth Powell. Loving father of Thomas A. (Susan) of Madbury, NH, Mark C. (Susi) of Elkton, MD and Mary C. (Mitchell Trivanovich) Powell of Huntington Beach, CA. Devoted grandfather of Rachael, Catherine and Christopher Powell. Brother of Don (Bonnie), Doris (Ralph) Raftery, Dick (Linda), Faye (Michael) Riley and the late Chuck (Peggy). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and an especially devoted nephew, Jeff Jones.

Mr. Powell was a 1940 graduate of Freedom High School, Freedom, PA. He later earned his Master's Degree in Education from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. A World War II U.S. Navy veteran, George served a total of 40 years until his retirement in 1982 (1942-47 active duty/35 years reserves).

Mr. Powell was a longtime educator, teaching at Pitman High School (1952), Riverside High School (1953-57) where he also served as Principal (1957-61) and returned to teaching at Collingswood High School (1961-96) after missing the classroom. He was a Physics teacher at Collingswood High School for 35 years where taught across the hall from his wife, Mary, a Chemistry teacher, and both led the ballroom dance club. The Powells' also worked for over 30 years in the Philadelphia Phillies ticket office. In 2007, the Borough of Collingswood recognized the Powells' for their many years of community service by naming 'Powell Lane' in their honor.

Relatives, friends, former students and associates are invited to attend his viewing Sunday, March 6th, 4 to 6 PM at the FOSTER-WARNE FUNERAL HOME, 820 Haddon Ave., Collingswood, NJ and Monday, March 7th, 10:15 to 11:15 AM from Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish at St. John Church, Park & Lees Aves., Collingswood, NJ. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 AM. Interment private.
