IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James D.
Campbell
November 24, 1950 – November 4, 2025
James D. Campbell, 74, passed away peacefully at his home in Haddonfield, NJ, surrounded by his loving family on November 4, 2025.
Beloved husband of 53 years to Susan E. Campbell (nee Perry). Loving father of Matthew (Molly) Campbell of Lodi, CA and Ryan (Susannah) Campbell of Haddon Twp., NJ. Devoted "Jimmy Gramps" to Jamie, Christian and Max and "Grandpa" to Charlotte and Luke. Dear son of the late James and Genevieve Campbell. He is also survived by his brothers, Leo (Cheryl) Campbell and Brian (Pedro) Campbell, his sisters-in-law, Janet (Mickey) Roach and Mindy (Paul) Perry as well as loving nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Jim grew up in northern Indiana and was the oldest of three boys. He was athletically inclined and enjoyed all sports, but as a youngster baseball was his favorite. In high school as he grew taller his interest in sports turned to basketball. He excelled in the sport at Andrean High School in Merrillville, IN. He earned a scholarship to Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He played for one year and then he turned his interest to his study of Architecture.
Living in a dorm presents many opportunities to meet new people, and one of those people turned out to be his future wife Susan. They were married 2 weeks after Susan graduated and remained at Ball State until Jim graduated two years later.
His first and most loved job took them to Philadelphia where he was employed as an architect for the Department of the Navy. He rose to Supervisory Architect and Contract Manager, overseeing multimillion dollar projects throughout the northeast United States and Bahrain. His friend shared with me that he was admired by colleagues within the Navy and by all consultants he worked with. His most loved activity during this period of his life was his work basketball team, which consisted of his work friends, playing together against opponents and then capping it off with beers in south Philly and plenty of mussels in red sauce.
He would have been happy to work and finally retire from his position, however the Navy decided to slim down operations and the Philadelphia region was eliminated. He then worked for a period of time for the state of New Jersey in building design before retiring.
Jim was a proud Dad of his two sons, Matthew and Ryan and proud Grandpa to 4 grandsons and granddaughter. During his retirement he and Susan were able to travel to California to visit Matt and family. He loved attending all his grandchildren's sporting events. His fishing trips to the Adirondacks were perhaps his favorite. The time he spent with them was precious.
Jim's presence will be missed by the many lives he touched.
