Obituary

James Everett, 85 years old, formerly of Bloomsburg PA, passed away October 12, 2024 in Collingswood, NJ surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

The son of the late John Francis and Edna Heath Everett, he was born April 5,1939 in Brownsburg, IN. He is the brother of Gail Zamarron, brother-in-law of Barbara Pennington, and was predeceased by his brother Sherman Schenck. Jim is survived by his daughter Erin Sergi (Anthony), grandsons Massimo and Lorenzo of Collingswood, NJ and his son Corey Everett, grandson Benjamin of Glenside, PA, and cousins, nieces, and nephews. Also surviving is his former wife, Elaine Everett.

At Brownsburg High School he excelled in mathematics and was a multi-sport athlete, in football, basketball, and track. He started at Purdue University before enlisting in the United States Navy, completing nuclear power school and serving in the submarine service. He then returned to Purdue and completed his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. In 1970 he started his career at Pennsylvania Power and Light in Allentown PA and transferred to the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station in Berwick PA during construction of the nuclear power plant. He retired in 1994.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bloomsburg PA, the Bloomsburg YMCA board of directors, Frosty Valley Country Club, and the Bloomsburg Elks Club.

Jim loved to be active and could often be found playing in the YMCA volleyball league, refereeing AYSO soccer games, or walking in the mall or on the hill on Pine Hollow Road. When Corey got into skateboarding, he helped him build a half pipe in the backyard. He enjoyed attending all types of sporting events at the local high schools and at Bloomsburg University. Sunday afternoon MG convertible rides in the Pennsylvania countryside will always be sweet memories.

Jim's favorite pastime was gardening. He grew up surrounded by farms and he found it therapeutic to spend hours in the backyard garden (mini farm). He enjoyed growing flowers to give to neighbors and friends after giving up on the idea that anyone in his immediate family was going to can the vegetables he grew.

His family will always remember the "Grandpa Rules": On a road trip, when the car stops everyone has to try to go to the bathroom. The car was not going to stop again 15 minutes down the road when you decided you needed to pee. If you are falling asleep in the movies, or a business meeting, or while on submarine patrol, stand up. It is much harder to fall asleep while standing. The maximum credits to take per college semester is 15, better to get a good grade and learn the material than overload yourself. Also, if you were introduced to someone he knew from playing volleyball then that person was special, since the best kind of folks play volleyball.

No service is planned for the New Jersey or Pennsylvania area. He will be brought home to Indiana and a memorial will be held with family and friends there in late November.

For those wishing to give something in his memory, consider a donation to the United Methodist Communities at Collingswood, 460 Haddon Avenue, Collingswood NJ 08108.
