Obituary

A longtime resident of Haddon Heights, NJ, Joe passed away surrounded by his loving family on January 2, 2023 at the age of 84.

Beloved husband of the late Carolyn (nee Avis).  Loving father of Carolyn J. (Gordon) Speakman of Haddon Heights, NJ, Joseph, III (Kimberly) of Medford, NJ and David (Margo) of Ellensburg, WA.  Devoted grandfather of Kristen (Ryan Dougherty) Cordner, Ryan Cordner, Victoria Speakman and Matthew Speakman.  Dear brother of Susan (Arthur) Doyle and the late Margaret (the late Jack) Baker.

Joe grew up in North Camden, NJ where he met his future wife, Carolyn Avis Cordner in the 7th grade.  He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and then Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, where he participated in the ROTC program.  Joe entered the U.S. Army as a lieutenant and was stationed in Yakima, WA.  After his service in the Army, he had a varied career working for the federal government--first as a systems analyst for the Marine Corps, then the Defense Logistics Agency and completed his career at the Defense Personnel Support Center.

Joe was a devoted family man and enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events and other activities.  He also enjoyed spending summers boating and fishing down the Jersey shore.  Traveling all over the world through his work and for pleasure was another of his passions.  Joe was also active in the Fellowship United Methodist Church in Haddon Heights, NJ where he was a member of the senior choir, bell choir, jubilee quartet, soloist and Sunday School teacher.  He was also a member of the Greater South Jersey Chorus, a volunteer coach for HHYA and a scout leader.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Memorial Service on Saturday, January 7, 11:00 AM at the Fellowship United Methodist Church, 704 Garden St., Haddon Heights, NJ 08035.  There will not be a public visitation beforehand.  Interment private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Joe's memory to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation ( www.myasthenia.org ).

Arrangements by the FOSTER-WARNE FUNERAL HOME, Audubon and Collingswood, NJ.
