Obituary

Mary Deisher died at home in Pennsauken, NJ on Sunday, March 11, 2018.

Mary, the daughter of the late John Deisher and Margaret P. Deisher (nee Wilson) was born in Philadelphia, PA.  She was predeceased by her brothers, John, Sam and Frank.  She is survived by 8 nieces and nephews and their spouses; her great nieces and nephews: Mitchell, Mark, David, Heather, Matthew, Scott, Lindsay, Marco, Nicholas, Benjamin and Ciara and their spouses and her great, great nephew, David.

After graduating from Ursinus College with her degree in Business Administration and Education, Mary began her career with Blue Cross Blue Shield as an Administrative Assistant.  She worked her way up to the Supervisor of the Enrollment Division.  She then moved to Ponce de Leon, Puerto Rico for a job as an Executive Secretary to the President of an Engineering Company.  Upon her return to Philadelphia, Mary became a partner in the family Real Estate business, John Deisher, Inc.

Her true passion, however, was teaching.  She became a Business teacher at Edgewood Regional High School in NJ where, with a close friend, she instituted a new program in 1982 called Life Skills and Introduction to Computers.  The comment in the newspaper mentioned this was in case computers were the wave of the future in business.  She was very proud to have been recognized as the Business Educator of the Year in 1986 by the Katharine Gibbs School.  She also taught at the Philadelphia Community College for a time.  Mary received many letters of thanks from former students which she cherished and kept.

Mary's next career took her into the world of antiques.  She became an integral member of the staff at H.A. Eberhardt and Sons antique shop in Philadelphia, which was the oldest continuously owned antique store in the country.

Mary turned her passion for reading into her final position, and her second favorite after teaching as the President of the Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library.  Mary was always an avid reader and this was a natural fit for her.  She was a driving force in the organization.  She spent many years organizing events and raising funds for different projects.  She was there when the organization started.  She is one of their first Lifetime members.  In fact, Mary was honored by the State of New Jersey for her work as President of the library, for which only one was selected in the entire state.  The library was holding books for her at the time of her passing.

Mary loved to travel far and wide.  She had a thirst for knowledge of any kind.  She enjoyed her political discussions and stimulating conversations.  She loved family and she had deep, long lasting friendships, some lasting over 60 years.  She will be sorely missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her visitation on Friday, March 23 10 to 11 AM at the FOSTER-WARNE FUNERAL HOME, 820 Haddon Ave., Collingswood, NJ.  Funeral Service will follow at 11 AM.  Interment will be private for family at Westminster Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, PA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary's memory to the Friends of the Pennsauken Library, c/o 5605 Crescent Ave., Pennsauken, NJ 08110 and/or to the children's charity of your choice.
