Kate died on December 28, 2016 after a heroic battle with leukemia. She was at home, deep in the love of her family. Kate was born in Paducah, KY on November 3, 1953. A 1975 graduate of the University of Delaware, she went on to achieve a Masters of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary and a Doctorate in Ministry from McCormack Theological Seminary. She served as a Christian Educator, an Associate Minister, an Interim Minister and a Hospital Chaplain. From 1991 to 2005 she was a Consultant for Mission Funding and Stewardship for Newton, Monmouth and West Jersey Presbyteries. Kate then served as Pastor of Collingswood Presbyterian Church from 2005 to 2015. She labored tirelessly to develop international partnerships between churches, traveling to Nicaragua, Kenya and Cuba. Throughout her life she was a champion for social justice and peacemaking issues and a strong advocate for the homeless. She was committed to helping communities of faith be more inclusive of all persons, including the LGBT community.
She and her husband, Gary Salmon, met while attending Seminary and were married in 1980. Their sons, William Garrison Killebrew Salmon and Brett Weston Killebrew Salmon were a source of great pride and the joy of her life.
Kate had a radiant smile and an easy, infectious laugh. There was no pretense about her and she was gracious and welcoming to all she encountered. Kate loved to help things grow: her sons, her garden, the communities of faith she served. She loved camping and the outdoors. Cape May and Cape Hatteras were among her favorite places. As an Alto, she seldom sang the melody line or the solo, but in song, and in life, she brought beautiful harmony to every opportunity.
Kate was predeceased by her parents, Patsy DeChurch and H.G. Killebrew. She is survived by her husband, Gary, her sons, William and Brett, her brother, Wesley (Robin) Killebrew and her niece, Katie (Alex) Neaton.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her visitation on Friday, January 27, 6 to 8 PM and Saturday, January 28, 9 to 10 AM at the Collingswood Presbyterian Church, 30 Fern Ave., Collingswood, NJ 08108. Her Memorial Service/Witness to the Resurrection will follow Saturday 10 AM. Interment private.
