Obituary

On December 3, 2014, of Haddon Heights, NJ. Age 97 years. Pat lived in Haddon Heights since 1964 and had many friends in the South Jersey area; they all knew him as "Bob" or "Robert". He grew up in Southwest Philadelphia and graduated from West Philadelphia High School.

Pat was an outstanding athlete and played halfback for the Elmwood Cadets in the Greater Philadelphia Semi-Pro Football Conference. In the 1940 City Quaker Bowl Championship game, he scored the winning points in a dramatic come-from-behind victory. For many years Pat was active as a football official.

During WWII, Lieutenant Appleby served as a platoon leader in an Army anti-aircraft battery. Reactivated for the Korean War in 1950, Pat was promoted to Captain assigned to a counter-intelligence unit until 1952.

Pat had a career as a claims adjuster for the Insurance Company of North America from 1946 until his retirement in 1982.

He is survived by his nephew, Gary (Teresa); two great nieces: Jilian (Francis) Donnelly and Lauren (William) Hayes and three very special little people: Catherine, Abigail and Sean.

Friends are invited to attend his viewing Sunday 2 to 4 PM and Monday 9:30 to 10:30 AM at the FOSTER-WARNE FUNERAL HOME, 250 White Horse Pike, Audubon, NJ. Funeral Service will follow Monday 10:30 AM. Interment Glenwood Memorial Gardens, Broomall, PA.
