Peacefully on July 9, 2026 at home surrounded by his loving family. A longtime resident of Haddon Township, NJ, Roland was 93 years old.
Beloved husband of 67 years to Joan D. Heilig (nee Harrop). Loving father of Susan (Stephen) Selby and Paul (Catherine) Heilig. Devoted granddad to Stephen (Lindsey) Selby, Michael Selby, Tyler (Sabrina) Selby, Shelby (Enzo) Frasca and Paul (Jessica) Heilig, Jr. and great grandfather to Sawyer, Stephen, Tyler and Colt. He is also survived by his brother, Ken (the late Mary) Heilig, nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Collingswood high school in 1950, he enlisted in the US Air Force and served with the 47th Air Rescue Squadron during the Korean War. His interest in communications / electronics lead him to become a radio operator and part of the 5 man crew that flew twin engine SA-16 Air Sea rescue amphibian aircraft. During the War The 47th Air Rescue Squadron operated out of Okinawa and successfully fulfilled its mission of rescuing downed pilots, search and rescue operations and medevac missions.
In 1955 after leaving the service he began his career with AT&T in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. His qualifications as radio operator in the USAF served him well and he became part of the broadcast TV and radio management team. These technical teams were responsible for the transmission of National TV and radio network / programing from coast to coast using microwave technology. He was promoted to the Lead supervisor of the management team which provided reliable Nationwide coverage through the 1980's.
While he was proud of his military and professional accomplishments, his greatest joy came from his family. He treasured his time with his loving wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He especially loved travel and time at the beach. His steady presence, generous heart, kind demeanor and unwavering love for his family will be remembered always.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Thursday, July 16, 9:30 to 11:00 AM at the FOSTER-WARNE FUNERAL HOME, 820 Haddon Ave., Collingswood, NJ. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM. Interment Bethel Cemetery, Sewell, NJ.
