Obituary

Roxana S. Gitlin passed away on December 29, 2014 at her home in Haddon Township, NJ. She was 60 years old.

Roxana lived a passionate life with diverse interests and accomplishments. She was a trained anthropologist, a skilled ballroom dancer, a gifted philosopher of science and a steadfast advocate for animal rights. At the time of her passing, she was also Director of Learning Services at Aramark Corporation in Philadelphia.

Born in Argentina on July 3, 1954, she grew up in the coastal city of Mar del Plata, which lies some 100 miles south of Buenos Aires. Then, upon entering the University at Buenos Aires, she studied philosophy and anthropology, obtaining a master's degree in the latter.

Roxana came to the United States in 1990 and enrolled in graduate studies at the University of Maryland, where she received a master's degree in speech communications. Her work there involved a rhetorical analysis of the arguments of several prominent 20th century philosophers.

Another element central to her life was her love of physical movement and dance. Starting with ballet early and moving to ballroom dance later in her life, she became adept in the arts of graceful movement and beauty of form.

Roxana's love for animals and her unflinching advocacy of humane and respectful treatment for them was also an essential aspect of who she was. Throughout her life she enjoyed and was honored to have the company of many animal friends. She also was a strong supporter of several organizations fighting for animal rights.

Roxana is survived by her husband, Jeffrey Woodside; her siblings, Corina and Walter Gitlin; her brothers-in-law, John Budzinski, Jeffrey Merritt and David Althaver; and her sisters-in-law, Carolyn, Cynthia and Cheryl Woodside. Roxana is also survived by her beloved kitty companions: Rascally, Explorer, Girlie Girl, Kitty and Baby.

There will be a private service and interment in the Washington, DC area.

In keeping with her love for animals, it was Roxana's wish that any contributions in her memory be made to one or more of the organizations listed below.
