Obituary

On January 4, 2021, of Haddon Twp., NJ.  Age 81 years.

Beloved husband of Lorraine "Lori."  Dear father of Helen (Joseph) Ferrante and Thomas (Fiance, Melissa).  Loving Grandfather and Pap of Nicholas, Ryan and Sean.  He is also lovingly survived by two sisters, Joanne (Michael) Pfaff and Roxanne (Gary) Raider and many other relatives and friends.

Tom was a lifelong philosopher. He graduated from Holy Spirit High School (class of '57) and attended the University of Dayton, where he met the love of his life, Lorraine. They were happily married for 47 years. He obtained two Master's Degrees in Philosophy and English. He was an English professor at various colleges and universities and a waiter at Silverlake Inn on the weekends. Later, he worked for the New Jersey Department of Transportation as a negotiator and was promoted to management until he retired three years ago. He was also the union president at CWA Local 1032 as well as the Legislative and Political Committee Chair. He was a proud union representative and lobbyist. He was very knowledgeable about politics. In retirement, he joined the local NAACP to continue his advocacy for equal rights. He and Lori were season ticket holders at a number of Philadelphia theaters, and he greatly enjoyed attending performances of the orchestra, opera, and numerous dramas and theater productions. He appreciated a well-made Manhattan or a vodka martini or two. He also loved to spend time with his three grandsons. He would bring them to the Crystal Lake Pool nearly every weekend in the summer, taking pride in keeping the kids active and away from the TV and their "electronic devices." He would talk to anyone and everyone, was a great conversationalist, and quickly had a new acquaintance's life story, which he would follow up on the next time they met. His family jokingly referred to him as the "Mayor" of Crystal Lake. He also loved to take day trips and vacations to the beach in the summer with his family, making sure to take his "final dip" in the ocean each day as the lifeguards ended their shift. He loved his family immensely. He wanted more than anything for everyone to know that they were loved within the family unit and throughout the extended family. We will all surely miss him dearly. Donations can be made online in his memory to Penn Medicine ALS Center at https://www.pennmedicine.org/als OR by check payable to Penn Comprehensive ALS Center and mailed to that name at 330 S. 9th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107.
