William Thomson Moore, 91, of Haddon Township, NJ and Milton, DE, an outstanding teacher and elementary and high school principal whose family has significant historical ties to the Philadelphia region, died peacefully in Cherry Hill, NJ on March 31, 2016 of congestive heart failure. Moore is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sheila (nee Berley); his son, Thomas of Haddon Township, NJ; three daughters, Sara (Holly) of San Francisco, CA, Victoria (Deborah) of New York, NY and Julia of Haddon Township, NJ; a sister, Elaine Tidwell of Miami, FL and four grandchildren: Amelia, Ethan, Olivia and Alexander.
Moore was the grandson of two-term Philadelphia Mayor and longtime Pennsylvania Congressman, J. Hampton Moore and a descendant of Colonial patriot Charles Thomson. William T. Moore was born and raised in Philadelphia and graduated from Philadelphia's Central High School before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Moore obtained bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Delaware, where he was a proud member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He then embarked on an elementary and high school teaching career that led to his appointment as founding Principal of the Horace Mann Elementary School in Cherry Hill, NJ. Moore later also held an Assistant Principal position at Cherry Hill High School West before retiring in 1988.
An avid sailor from a very young age, a teenage Moore crewed aboard Baltimore spice baron Charles P. McCormick's sailing yacht and never lost his love of sailing, usually in the company of one or more of his children. Moore also loved the Philadelphia Orchestra and was in regular attendance at concerts with his family.
Moore's intelligence, kindness, compassion and empathy touched the spirits of all who knew him, from his family and many friends to the hundreds of students he taught and mentored, and he held true to the idea of humor and laughter as the core of a life well lived.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation on Saturday, April 9th, 1 to 2 PM at the FOSTER-WARNE FUNERAL HOME, 820 Haddon Ave., Collingswood, NJ. Memorial Service will follow at 2 PM. Interment private.
